Japandi living room interior with tile

Earthy minimalism

Japandi living-room tiles

Japandi living rooms work with warm-tonal porcelain — either a long oak-look plank in raw or smoked finish, or a warm-grey stone-look in 750×1500mm. The tile should feel underfoot like a continuation of the timber furniture, not a separate cold plane. Pair with low linen seating, one quiet artwork, and natural-fibre rugs in jute or wool. The brief is calm, layered, and inarguably warm — Japandi never reads minimalist-cold.

Japandi living room — questions

What format suits a Japandi living-room floor?
Long planks (200×1200mm or 240×1500mm) in oak-look porcelain for the timber direction, or 600×1200mm rectified stone-look for the matte-stone direction. Both formats hide grout and read continuous.
Will a tiled floor work with underfloor heating?
Porcelain is the best floor surface for hydronic or electric underfloor heating — it conducts heat efficiently and won't warp like timber. If you're tiling a living area for warmth, factor underfloor in at the build stage.
How do I stop a tiled living room from echoing?
Layer wool or jute rugs over the tile, hang heavy linen curtains, add upholstered seating with timber framing. The hard-surface acoustics are real but easy to soften — Japandi already calls for these layers.
