Mediterranean bathroom interior with tile

Terracotta, zellige, sun-bleached stone

Mediterranean bathroom tiles

Mediterranean bathrooms turn on warm terracotta and zellige glazed ceramic — sun-bleached colour, irregular hand-made surfaces, and warm-white grout. The classic move is a soft-terracotta or warm-cotto porcelain floor (matte, 200×200mm or 600×600mm) with a glazed zellige feature wall in cream, sage, or warm ochre behind the vanity. Brushed-brass or aged-brass tapware, a stone vessel basin, and one olive-toned linen towel finish it.

Mediterranean bathroom — questions

Real zellige or porcelain zellige-look?
Real Moroccan zellige has the most character — every tile is hand-glazed and slightly different — but it's roughly 3× the cost and trickier to install. Porcelain zellige-look gives 90% of the visual with a tiler-friendly square edge and predictable surface.
What grout colour works with zellige?
Warm white or pale cream grout — never grey or black, which fights the hand-made warmth. Pick a 3mm joint width to celebrate the irregular tile edges; tighter joints look forced, wider joints look rustic-rough.
Does terracotta flooring need sealing?
Real terracotta does — apply a penetrating sealer at install, then re-seal every 12–18 months in a wet area. Terracotta-look porcelain needs zero sealing and is more practical in a wet bathroom. Same look, fraction of the maintenance.
